Does Body Need Fat?

Who doesn’t know that too much cholesterol and other fats cause various diseases and that careful monitoring of fat intake is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle?

However, a certain amount of fat is needed for the body to function and cannot be produced by the body itself.

Triglycerides, cholesterol and other vital fatty acids (the scientific name for fats that the body cannot produce on its own) store energy, provide heat to the body and protect the internal organs.

Fats are like messengers that help proteins perform their functions.

They also start chemical reactions that partially regulate growth, the immune and reproductive systems, and other basic metabolic functions. It is fat, specifically cholesterol, that ensures the existence of the cell membrane.

The fat-containing end of the membrane molecules moves away from the water inside and outside the cells, while the other end moves closer to it.

The molecules automatically strung together to form a semi-permeable membrane. The result is a flexible protective barrier that functions like a bouncer in the club, allowing only the necessary molecules to enter the cells.

The formation, digestion, storage and mobilization of fat are the basis for energy regulation in both humans and animals.

If we lose the balance at any stage of this cycle, problems such as heart disease or diabetes may occur. If you have high levels of triglycerides in your blood, there is a risk of the arteries clogging, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

Another function of fat is to help the body store certain nutrients. The so-called “fat-soluble vitamins” – A, D, E, K – are found in the liver and adipose tissue.

Knowing the importance of fat in many of the body’s basic functions, the US National Institutes of Health is funding research into fats in humans and other organisms to learn more about their function and dysfunction.
