A person spends a third of his life asleep and dreams are a large part of this time, but most of the time he does not remember any of it.

You Are Awake. But What About The Brain?

When a person falls asleep, the regions of the brain do not turn off all at once. Scientists have found that one of the last regions to fall asleep is the area in both hemispheres of the brain that moves information from short-term memory to long-term memory.

If this region is the last to fall asleep, it may be the last to wake up. Therefore, it is easy to imagine that when you wake up; the dream is still in short-term memory, but because the responsible region of the brain is not yet awake, the brain cannot store this information.

The research team could find that those who remember dreams better wake up at night relatively more often. The wake-up phase lasted on average 2 minutes, but for the second group of participants it was only 1 minute.

Neurochemistry Factor

We also associate our low capacity to process recent memories during sleep with changes in the levels of two neurotransmitters, acetylcholine and noradrenaline.

These neurotransmitters play an important role in memory preservation. When a person falls asleep, the levels of acetylcholine and noradrenaline fall sharply.

But when the so-called REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep phase begins, in which we see the brightest dreams, unexpected changes occur – acetylcholine levels rise to wakefulness levels, but noradrenaline levels do not change.

Scientists have yet to fully understand why this is happening, but some think that the combination of neurotransmitters could be the reason we forget dreams.

High levels of acetylcholine affect the cerebral cortex, creating an active, awake-like state, while low levels of noradrenaline reduce the ability to remember thought journeys during this phase.

Sometimes Dreams Are Not Worth Remembering

Dream researcher Ernest Hartmann says, “It is possible that our brains also pass dreams as insignificant information, especially if nothing special happens in them.”

Dreams that are bright, emotional, and in a connected form are usually remembered better. Perhaps these wake us up more, and the related narrative penetrates the memory better.
